Narotham, I don't know if either of the events you mentioned will have too much of an impact. Bad news from Japan is not news anymore and Kohl's defeat is consistent with the wave of center-left governments across Europe; Britain's Tony Blair and France's Lionel Jospin for example. Germany's unemployment rate hovering over 10% and social welfare cuts made by Kohl were certainly factors. Turnout for the vote was 82% or registered voters.
