This could in fact be a trading pattern, and taking profits is a good thing as pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered. It is good not to be greedy.

However, what if the next move up is the breakout and it keeps going up?

You never know, and it all depends on your investment style. Seems like yours works for you, so I'd stick with it. If you miss a move up, you can always jump on anyway, only missing a point or two.
