TOKYO (September 27, 1998 7:07 p.m. EDT nandotimes.com) -- A Japanese company with liabilities of nearly $15 billion has applied for court protection in what would be one of the largest bankruptcies in Japan since World War II, a newspaper said Monday.

Japan Leasing Corp., one of three non-bank affiliates of the troubled Long-Term Credit Bank of Japan, is estimated to have debts exceeding $14.7 billion, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported.

Company officials were not immediately available for comment, they were shopping for swords.
