Christine, <<one of the core beliefs of New Agers everywhere is that there are essentially two groups of people on earth--them and the "Old Agers" who want to maintain the status quo and destroy the earth.>> I guess I know why I'm not a new ager. What a stupid, despicable, notion (I do hope you aren't one). Brings us right back to the old idea of "we know what's wrong and what needs to be done, and anyone who doesn't agree is wrong and not worth listening to". I don't see that as one word different from Emile's ravings. <<if everyone who believes channels their positive energy, darkness can be overcome, and the New Age will prevail.>> And if they channel their energy through one individual, that individual will inevitably succumb to the temptations that go with power, and the result will be entirely old age. <<a planet full of fair opportunities, where ending misery and preserving the environment are very important considerations, and all religious belief systems are respected and there is a movement to produce harmony between them, is a vision I find very positive.>> What bothers me is the means by which this vision is to be attained: follow ME, believe in ME. Why should we believe that this man is doing or has ever done anything to back up his words? Has anyone ever heard of him except through this Creme person? OK, he says he wants good things. Any American politician can say as much, and you already know what I think of them. There's some mighty big talk on that site, and not much hard stuff behind it. A warning sign, I'd say. I don't really worry about Maitreya's movement, as I doubt it will ever go beyond the fringe. But I do think in principle that any movement that claims to be able to achieve positive goals through the power of belief is destructive to the extent that it diverts people from the things that they can and should be doing. Why should I go out and fight through the nastiness of real-world politics to protect the environment? I'll just believe in Maitreya - and send the occasional fat check for the maintenance of Ben's web page - and he'll make everything ok. Nice words, no substance. Crap, in other words, if you'll forgive the expression. Just my humble (well, sort of) opinion. Steve
