O'49er - don't you think the modern understanding of derivatives means a variation on an existing (accepted) financial instrument - eg convertible bond (as mentioned), a warrant, issued as a sweetener to a bond issue, stock option, etc. Certainly these are the commonly accepted meanings of the term. E
