Any world currency is going to take a long time. Yes in all likelihood there will be some sort of interim step that involve the three major economic regions. But there is also a possibility that the major currency blocks merge first, afterall their economies are all ready pretty tightly aligned. In that the scenario the fringe currencies will ultimately have the choice of aligning with the 'global' currency or condemning themselves to becoming permanent economic underachievers. Yes there will be a lot of roadblocks but it will happen eventually.
