ROUND ROCK, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 28, 1998--
Greater System Performance, Storage Capacity and Rack Density Combine To Handle Companies' Most Popular Business Applications
Dell Computer Corporation (NASDAQ:DELL.O) -- the No. 2 server vendor in the United States and No. 4 worldwide(1) -- today announced the Dell(R) PowerEdge(R) 4300, a new department-level server that offers customers significant increases in system performance, a 100 percent improvement in rack density and more than twice the internal storage over its predecessor. Available immediately worldwide with U.S. prices starting at $4,849, the PowerEdge 4300 is ideal for medium and large businesses, and government institutions that run large-scale file- and print-sharing, electronic mail and database applications where hundreds of clients may be attached to the server. It is also well suited for small and medium businesses that may run all their computing operations on a single server. Due to its management features, businesses with multiple stores or remote office locations also will find the PowerEdge 4300 well suited to those environments. The server incorporates new technological and mechanical advances over its departmental predecessor that provide an excellent platform for customers running business-critical applications such as Microsoft(R) Exchange(R) messaging software and database software like Oracle8(tm) and Microsoft SQL Server(R). (Additional pricing/configuration details attached.) New features available on the PowerEdge 4300 include:
*T
-- Rack-optimized mechanical design that accommodates up to six PowerEdge 4300 servers in a standard rack enclosure with a 100 percent improvement in rack density over the previous departmental server from Dell. The server also can be used in a stand-alone tower configuration.
-- Added levels of system redundancy with hot-pluggable, redundant power and cooling supply capability and hot-pluggable hard drives.
-- More than twice the storage capacity of Dell's previous-generation departmental server with up to 126 gigabytes (GB) of internal storage to handle the increasing sizes and amounts of data companies accumulate each day.
-- Significant system performance increases that enable a company to have faster access to critical data residing on its server or attached storage devices.

These new features, combined with other advances such as faster processors, system bus and SCSI controller, deliver better computing capability in a department-level server from Dell, the fastest growing server vendor in the world(2). "We believe the combination of price and features in this class of server makes this the best choice for customers," said Russ Holt, vice president, department and workgroup servers, Dell Enterprise Systems Group. "The PowerEdge 4300 offers customers key enterprise-level features at an attractive price in a server that can help protect a company's IT investments." Using Microsoft Cluster Server software (MSCS), the PowerEdge 4300 can be clustered together to provide greater system uptime in branch offices where onsite network service and support may be limited. Support for MSCS on the PowerEdge 4300 is expected within 30 days. Customers can also improve uptime in branch offices using Dell's optional Remote Assistant Card, version 2 (DRAC 2), which gives system administrators the ability to remotely manage their servers via either modem or a local area network. Available today, DRAC 2 provides advanced warning of potential server failure, helping lower the cost of system ownership by minimizing the need for onsite support, and allows system administrators to remotely access, diagnose and manage their servers even if the operating system is unresponsive or the system has lost power. The PowerEdge 4300 supports Dell's single-channel and dual-channel redundant array of independent disks (RAID) controllers. Both the single-channel PowerEdge RAID Controller (PERC 2/SC) and dual-channel PowerEdge RAID Controller (PERC) help improve data protection and provide support for hot-pluggable hard drives. The PERC and PERC 2/SC offer departmental customers two levels of performance and redundancy depending on their requirements. Every PowerEdge 4300 server can be built to order and shipped directly from the factory, offering customers the exact configuration they want for their computing environment. Microsoft(R) Windows NT(R) Server 4.0 and Novell(R) IntraNetWare(R) 4.11 operating systems can be factory-installed on all Dell PowerEdge servers, including the new PowerEdge 4300. Dell's build-to-order capability and factory-installation program reduce costs and risk for the customer and help ensure product quality and consistency when purchasing multiple servers. Other operating systems or software applications can be configured, tested and installed through DellPlus(tm) Server Integration, a value-added service for customers who require more complex, or specialized server solutions, that are pre-configured by Dell and shipped to the customer ready-to-use. Service and support for the PowerEdge 4300 and other Dell PowerEdge server and PowerVault(tm) storage products is provided by Dell and Dell Service Partners, Wang Global(R) and Unisys(R). Through its alliance with Wang and Unisys, Dell global customers have access to a combined worldwide force of more than 25,000 highly trained engineers, technicians, analysts and consultants. In addition to the high-availability and reliability features that ship standard with the PowerEdge 4300, this server also ships with ready-to-run manageability features that give customers choice when deciding on systems and network management applications or frameworks. These features support the Dell OpenManage(tm) systems management strategy that helps customers gain control over their computer systems while also helping to reduce the cost of owning them. As part of that strategy, all Dell PowerEdge servers come installed with HP OpenView(R) Network Node Manager Special Edition. With the introduction of the department-level PowerEdge 4300, Dell rounds out its award-winning line of Intel(R) Pentium II(R) and Pentium II Xeon(tm)-based PowerEdge servers which include the workgroup-level PowerEdge 2300 and enterprise-class PowerEdge 6300. The PowerEdge server family includes a three-year limited warranty and DirectLine(SM) operating system support. Customers can select optional enhancements to their service plan. Optional services include additional years of next-business-day on-site service, custom installation services, and CriticalCare(R) Plus four-hour response in 50 major metropolitan areas.
