First Oracle, now Sybase. Hopefully these two will be
at each others throats to see who can dominate the Palm.

Sometimes I think that if COMS spun off the Palm division
as sort of an IPO, we'd double or triple the worth of
those shares<g>

3Com CEO Eric Benhamou Calls On Federal Government to Rapidly
Increase Funding for Technology R&D

In Keynote Address to Internet2 Conference, Benhamou Outlines
Economic Danger of Present R&D Funding Levels

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 28, 1998--
"The Federal government must rapidly increase R&D funding to
help develop high-performance computer capabilities, like
Internet2, if our economy and consumers are to realize
technology's full potential for eliminating the barriers of access,
time and distance," 3Com CEO and Chairman Eric Benhamou
said Sunday in a keynote address to the fall Internet2 conference
in San Francisco. "The present Federal investment in technology
research is woefully inadequate to meet the challenge of driving
continued economic progress into the 21st century."

Internet2 is a partnership among Federal research agencies and
leaders in the information technology industry to help the nation's
leading research universities build next-generation computer
networks that support advanced education and research
applications.

"The technology and applications being developed and perfected
on Internet2 campuses will deliver affordable high-speed,
high-performance networking technology to the home user within
three years, as long as the appropriate resources are made
available," Benhamou said.

Benhamou is a member of the President's Information
Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC) which recently
submitted a report to the president outlining the implications of the
serious shortfall in government information technology (IT)
research. The committee's report pointed out that the technical
advances that led to today's information tools, including the
Internet, began with Federal government support of research by
private industry and universities. The report also stated that
one-third of the total growth in U.S. production since 1992 has
come from businesses that produce computers, semiconductors,
software and communications equipment.

Over 130 U.S. Internet2 campuses are working to deploy
next-generation converged network technology, or networks that
combine the parallel voice, video and data traffic onto a single
network, reducing communications, operations and network
management expenses. Converged networks are a prerequisite to
realizing the benefits of a new generation of applications,
including IP telephony. 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq:COMS), a
leader in developing and implementing next-generation
networking technology, recently estimated the global market for
capital equipment to enable convergence technology in the
enterprise to be $15-20 billion a year by 2003.

"Like ARPANET and the Internet, Internet2 will drive the
development of new applications, like digital libraries, distributed
education and collaborative research, that will lead our economy
and society into a new era," Benhamou said. "We are limited only
by our commitment and our creativity."

Last fall, 3Com was named a Corporate Partner of Internet2 and
has committed an initial $1 million in networking equipment to
assist universities in upgrading their campus network designs. In
addition to the total $2 million in equipment grants, 3Com is also
providing engineering expertise and technical support to Internet2
universities to help them create and manage advanced campus
network infrastructures that meet their technology objectives.
