HANTILLY, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 28, 1998--GTE (NYSE:GTE)
announced today that it has created a national, wireless stock-trading
system that extends the reach of popular online investment programs
from consumers' desktops to their mobile phones.
Called GTE Wireless Trader, the online investment tool will allow
individuals to execute trades, receive alerts, obtain real-time stock
quotes and manage their portfolios from browser-equipped portable
"smart" phones. GTE is marketing the system to stock-brokerage firms
and clearing houses to use in expanding their service offerings to the
personal investing community.
"Nearly 25 percent of all stock trades today are made through
online brokerage services. GTE Wireless Trader can enable those same
consumers to stay in touch with the market even when they are away
from their desks or home computers," said Irving Zaks, vice president
of GTE's information systems division in Chantilly, Va.
GTE Wireless Trader uses widely available digital wireless
network services such as GTE's Internet on the Run(SM), enabling
mobile investors to maintain access to critical information and make
timely trading decisions.
The system was developed using software from Unwired Planet, a
leading provider of software platforms for secure wireless Internet
access from mass-market handheld devices.
"Seconds count in trading. As Internet-based trading becomes more
popular, wireless access will be a necessity for many investors," said
Ben Linden, vice president of marketing for Unwired Plant. "GTE
Wireless Trader creates a turnkey solution for brokerage firms to
offer leading-edge services to their clients."
With revenues of more than $23 billion in 1997, GTE is one of the
largest telecommunications companies and a leading provider of
integrated telecommunications services. The Financial Services group
that developed GTE Wireless Trader is based at GTE's Chantilly, Va.,
facility, and focuses on providing state-of-the-art business
solutions to the financial industry. Customers include the New York
Stock Exchange and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Additional

I am hopeful that GMGC is already poised to take the steps you outlined in your post.Your points are well taken. I agree that they cannot go it alone in trying to compete with the big boys.

I guess my position is that they will be partnering with some or many of the big boys to various degrees. Certainly GMGC has the ability to get Carriers and others into the virtual assistant game quickly and with a technology that is functioning in the real world. Of course, other of the big boys will be competition. The timing will be key.

They are trying to establish Magic Talk as a brand name, but I think they will allow the rest of the service to be used by Carriers without reference to Portico. Somewhat like you alluded to, "with Magic Talk inside".

Let us hope that GMGC's well positioned connections come home to roost both with the personal assistant market and the e-commerce market. I think we are both counting on it.

Seconds Out.
