Hi Sam Ferguson; About that minimum wage... (Off topic)

The federal minimum wage is a wage that applies to this entire country of ours. It currently is way low in Seattle, where the state minimum wage is higher, and the local McDonalds probably pays well over minimum.

The justification for a minimum wage is to ensure that all working citizens don't have to live under conditions of terrible poverty.

But this is a federal law, and it has to apply to the whole country. And this country is a collection of very distinct states and counties. And the cost of living varies incredibly over this country.

Workers on the Alaska pipeline are going to think $6.15 per hour is chicken feed. But you can live mighty grand on that much income in some parts of this country.

An wage of $6.15 per hour by 1920 hours per year gives a total income of $11,808 per year. If you are supporting more than one person on this income, you will get subsidies from the income tax, I believe.

Housing can be had mighty cheap in east Texas. This is a part of the country with low heating costs, and you can grow your own food very easily. I know. My family has lived in that area for close to 200 years, and the growing season is incredible. Here is enough land to grow a huge amount of food, with electricity, etc., at a price a minimum wage earner could easily afford to buy. If you're interested, the ad even includes a picture:

Sure a higher minimum wage makes great sense for all you city dwellers. But raising the minimum wage forces folks out in the country to either evade the law or fire their employees.

I am not suggesting that anybody move out to east Texas, or any other cheap area. What I am proving is that a single, national minimum wage doesn't make any sense. Wages are a local issue, not a national one.
