You don't need to think about futures. Several banks and brokers here will let someone with $A10000-20000 opening a foreign currency trading account the overnight margin is 4%. The minimum trade is typically $A100000 which needs a 4% margin overnight ($A4000). Intraday the margin is only 2%.

On bonds several banks would make loans to anyone who'd borrow $A20000-40000 minimum to buy bond based unit trusts at 5% margin. You can buy shares here with a 30% margin.

So there's nothing weird about LTCM having a $100 billion portfolio with $5billion in capital
