Bill…

>>Can someone who is more technically astute than I am tell me why it does not make sense for ODIS to develop some applications i.e. e-commerce etc<<

I am not technically oriented but I do have a few comments on the subject.

You raise a good question however it is easier said than done based on years of experience. IMO, in order to be a big time revenue/profit producer from application development standpoint you need to develop horizontal applications. That is applications that can be used in more than one industry. Microsoft, Oracle, etc. have done that with their applications such as word, xcel, etc. This is not to say that vertical applications in a given industry are not profitable just they are not of the magnitude of great horizontal applications.

Again IMO, developing applications in a single industry requires immense knowledge of that industry, it remains a niche market and comes in direct conflict with the people that ODIS is selling their current products to.

Again IMO, it is the third point that I feel is the most critical. Creating channel conflict is a marketing nightmare.

I feel their product is well positioned in a horizontal way to attract vertical application developers in a number of industries. Further, again IMO, I do not believe ODIS has the management bandwidth and financial resources to mount a serious vertical application strategy and not at the same time mess up what they are doing.

Now developing some good object based horizontal applications is a great idea. I will leave that to the more technically inclined to comment on.

Regards

Bob T.

Maybe Goldman remembers the Puchasing and Banking "applications?" developed at Cullinet.
