Gateway Introduces World's Lightest Notebook with DVD

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 28, 1998--

New Solo 3100 packs DVD II, Pentium II processor technology, 12.1-inch TFT display into small, sleek form factor for
$2,499

Gateway today announced the new Solo(R) 3100 - code named FireAnt - the world's lightest portable PC with integrated DVD . The Solo 3100 redefines the mainstream notebook category by offering DVD and exceptional performance in a small form factor at a low price.
The Solo 3100 includes a DVD II drive, making it the industry's lightest notebook to date with this feature. The DVD II drive makes the 1.2-inch-thin notebook fully functional, along with a 12.1-inch TFT display, Pentium(R) II processor, full-size keyboard, and standard ports.

"The Solo 3100 completes the Solo product line, giving highly mobile clients a small and light notebook that does not require them to sacrifice features such as DVD or a Pentium II processor," said Bob Burnett, vice president, mobile systems. "The Solo 3100 continues Gateway's leadership role in redefining the mobile computing market."

Small and Powerful

This new addition to the Solo notebook family supports Intel's new 300MHz Pentium II processor, as well as Intel's 233 MHz Pentium II processor and 233MHz Pentium processor with MMX(TM) technology. For optimum performance, the Solo 3100 has 2.5MB of video memory and uses NeoMagic's MagicMedia 256AV with a 256-bit graphic accelerator. The notebook has a powerful lithium ion battery, holds up to 160MB of SDRAM, and has an internal V.90 modem.
Solo 3100 models come standard with a client's choice of either a DVD II or CD-ROM drive. DVD technology provides clients with significantly more storage capacity than CD-ROM, which is necessary for increasingly complex software. Solo 3100 notebooks equipped with DVD allow clients to watch movies on their notebook when a DVD video PC card is used.

The Solo 3100 is available with up to a 4GB hard disk. The floppy drive is external and connects via the parallel port. Pointing is achieved through the EZ Point(R) pointing device located on the keyboard's home row between the G, H and B keys.

"The combination of features found in the FireAnt should be very attractive not only to individuals purchasing them, but also to larger organizations looking for mass deployment of lightweight, mobile computers," said Aaron Goldberg, executive vice president of Ziff Davis Market Intelligence.

Aesthetic Appeal

The Solo 3100 is two-toned with a silver-colored, magnesium-alloy cover, making it lighter and more durable, and a jet-black bottom half. A leather bag, similar to a day planner case, is included with each system. The leather case allows clients to carry the Solo 3100 like a planner or pack it in a notebook bag or briefcase. This feature, in combination with the notebook's weight of 4.6 to 5.2 pounds, depending on the configuration, makes the notebook especially convenient to take from place to place.

Solo 3100 for Business Users

The Solo 3100 is ideal for a highly mobile field force or an executive. LANDesk(R) Client Manager and SM BIOS 2.1 ships standard with all Solo 3100s purchased through Gateway, allowing a company's Information Systems department to manage company notebooks from remote sites. Business clients can choose between Windows(R) 95, Windows(R) 98, or Windows NT(R) for their Solo 3100 systems. The Solo 3100 is certified and compliant for DMI 2.0, Wired for Management 1.18 and ACPI 1.0.
The Solo 3100SE is configured for business clients with a 12.1 TFT display, 233MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology, 32MB of SDRAM, CD-ROM, 2GB hard disk, an external floppy drive, lithium-ion battery, an internal V.90 modem, leather portfolio carrying case, Windows 95, and Microsoft Works 95 software for $2,099.

The Solo 3100LS is configured for business clients with a 12.1 TFT display, 233MHz Pentium II processor, 64MB of SDRAM, CD-ROM, a 4GB hard disk, an external floppy drive, lithium-ion battery, an internal V.90 modem, leather portfolio carrying case, Windows 95 and Microsoft(R) Office 97, SBE for $2,499.

Solo 3100 for Home Users, Students, Enthusiasts

The Solo 3100's sleek design, DVD capabilities and light weight make it a perfect notebook for clients on the go. Notebook enthusiasts will appreciate the Solo 3100's inclusion of the latest technological innovations, such as Intel's 300MHz Pentium II processor. Gateway's Your:)Ware(SM) program makes purchasing the Solo 3100 affordable and easy.
Like all Solo line notebooks, the Solo 3100 can be custom configured to best fit a client's needs. The 3100SE and 3100LS can be configured with a CD-ROM or DVD , and the Solo 3100LS with DVD starts at $2,499. The 3100XL ships standard with a DVD II drive. All systems shipping with DVD receive a PC card, which provides a high-quality, full-featured DVD solution, and a $20 coupon from DVD Express.(1) The coupon can be used toward the purchase price of DVD movies.

The Solo 3100XL is configured with a 12.1 TFT display, 300MHz Pentium II processor, 64MB of SDRAM, DVD II, a Kingmax DVD card, a 4GB hard disk, external floppy drive, lithium-ion battery, internal V.90 modem, leather portfolio carrying case, Windows 98 and Microsoft Office 97, SBE for $2,999.
