Larry--I must say I would have envied certain aspects of your youth.
I wasn't allowed near heavy weaponry for some reason. We couldn't get cherry bombs. We did get a lot of fire crackers though. People would go to the rodeo grounds on July 4 to set off fire works. We would go July 5 and pick up everything they dropped or misfired. Usually ended up with a shopping bag of fire works.
I unfortunately lacked reliable source of snakes near my house. By good luck though when I moved from S. Dakota to Texas I brought a bunch of four o'clock seeds and planted them on one side of the house. They grew like weeds and gave my friends and me a great supply of grasshoppers. These things were around two inches long and as big around as my little finger. Plus I hated them for eating my flowers.
We started out making paper airplanes and taping fire crackers in them. We quickly realized though that we needed a pilot. That is where the grasshoppers came in. It took a bit of altering the design of the airplanes to get them to handle the added weight but eventually we got everything balanced. Everything was very satisfying for a group of 9 to 11 year olds. The only real drawback was raking up the paper out of the back yard.
I recall on one memorable occasion the fire cracker fizzled and instead of bursting the contents burned and the cracker acted like a rocket booster. While we were very pleased with the results unfortunately for the pilot all of our design work had been to improve aerodynamics not to fire proof the aircraft.
Nothing like some fond childhood memories to gladden the heart.
