There's also the fuzzy logic approach. After all the numbers are in and tabulated with a range of possible outcomes, the most likely scenario will fall somewhere near the middle. This would also be consistent with the seasonal analysis approach. If the leaves are turning brown, the breeze is cooler, fish are schooling, and pumpkins are ripe it's fall.
