Solution to Fuel Market for Mobile Enterprise Applications for Palm(TM) Based

Devices; More Than 200 Leading Application Providers Declare Support

EMERYVILLE, Calif. and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Sybase, Inc., (Nasdaq: SYBS) and 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS) today announced a strategic relationship to bring the industry's leading mobile database, Adaptive Server Anywhere, and its UltraLite technology, to the Palm Computing(R) platform. The two companies plan to work together to integrate their respective technologies, providing software developers a local, SQL-based relational database optimized for applications built for the Palm Computing platform. Sybase this month is launching a widespread beta program for its UltraLite deployment technology for the Palm Computing platform, with more than 200 application developers signed-up to date.

Sybase and 3Com plan to jointly market this solution to their customers and business partners, and are working closely with leading sales force automation and healthcare partners to ensure timely delivery of applications for Palm Computing platform products such as the Palm III(TM) connected organizer, the IBM WorkPad PC Companion, the Symbol SPT 1500 and the pdQ smartphone from QUALCOMM.

This joint solution is designed to significantly improve developer productivity, helping to fuel the market for enterprise applications designed for deployment on handheld computing products. Sybase's UltraLite technology brings two-way server synchronization to the Palm Computing platform, allowing access to major corporate databases and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. This will enable organizations to extend critical business applications such as sales force automation to Palm Computing platform-based devices. In addition, UltraLite is designed to integrate seamlessly with Palm's premiere development tool, CodeWarrior for the Palm Computing platform.

"The relationship between Sybase and 3Com and the introduction of Sybase's UltraLite database for the PalmPilot organizer will enable us to break new ground in delivering point-of-care mobile healthcare solutions," said Mathieu Wiepert, senior technology consultant at BORN Information Services, a Sybase System Integrator Partner. "Doctors and nurses will now be able to access and update critical patient information at a patient's bedside, thereby significantly reducing administrative costs and increasing the accuracy of patient profile information."

"Both Sybase and 3Com have an early technology lead in the handheld market," said Dale Okuno (CLU), president of E-Z Data Inc., a leading sales force automation vendor. "Many of our 70,000 users in the insurance industry have already expressed interest in Palm based devices, and we look forward to working with Sybase and 3Com to spur our growth in the handheld marketplace."

"Integration of data and business processes is the foundation for the extended enterprise," said Steve Robins, analyst, Yankee Group. "Sybase's UltraLite embedded database technology enables this integration across the enterprise for the Palm Computing platform -- and will fuel the development and deployment of applications for 3Com's Palm based devices."

"3Com's relationship with Sybase delivers benefits for both enterprise developers and customers. UltraLite enables enterprise software vendors to speed up the development process, allowing quicker time to market and cost savings," said Mark Bercow, vice president, strategic alliances and platform development at Palm Computing, Inc., a 3Com company. "Mobile workers will then be able to take advantage of a broader array of enterprise solutions -- such as sales force automation, order management or inventory applications -- without requiring extensive knowledge of database technology."

"Our strategic partnership with 3Com extends the reach of enterprise information by seamlessly synchronizing data from Palm-based devices to enterprise servers," said Terry Stepien, vice president and general manager, Sybase's Mobile and Embedded Computing division. "Together Sybase and 3Com are sparking growth of enterprise mobile applications for the Palm Computing platform across a variety of industries."

Sybase's UltraLite Database Technology for Palm(TM) Devices

Sybase's UltraLite deployment option of Adaptive Server Anywhere is the first local, SQL-based relational database optimized for the Palm Computing platform. Organizations can customize the capabilities of the database to match the memory requirements of an application running on Palm Computing platform devices; the customized database can have a memory "fingerprint" as small as 50K. Two-way server synchronization to major corporate databases allows users to download and upload mission-critical data, ensuring that up-to-date information is available both at their fingertips and at their corporate office.

Organizations can participate in Sybase's UltraLite beta program by contacting Sybase at: www.sybase.com/products/ultralite/beta.

About the Palm Computing Platform

The Palm Computing platform is the foundation for the market-leading 3Com(R) Palm III and PalmPilot connected organizers and other handheld computing products from leaders such as QUALCOMM, which licensed the platform to integrate its CDMA wireless phone -- the pdQ smartphone -- with the Palm Computing platform; IBM, which provides the IBM WorkPad PC Companion for the enterprise market; Franklin Covey, which supplies the Franklin Electronic Day Planner for the training and time management industry; and Symbol Technologies, whose expertise in bar code scanning and wireless LAN and WAN connectivity will take the Palm Computing platform further into various vertical markets via the Symbol SPT 1500 product.

The Palm Computing platform is ideally suited as a foundation for mobile enterprise data management; Palm products offer a small lightweight form-factor, ease-of-use, and seamless data synchronization.

Qualcomm's year end is September 30th. The quarterly report at the year end is always later than normal. In addition, there will be a lot of extra accounting with the spin off.
