Birds Do It, Bees Do It, Even Grandma Does It Monday September 28 1:27 PM EDT By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Correspondent WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Nearly half of all Americans over the age of 60 have sex at least once a month and 40 percent of them would like to have it more often, according to a survey released Monday. And they say their sex lives are more emotionally satisfying than when they were in their 40s, according to the survey, published by the National Council on the Aging. ''Our study debunks the prevailing myths about sexuality in older years,'' James Firman, council president, said in a statement. ''Older people are sexually active,'' Neal Cutler, director of survey research for the Council, told a news conference. ''They view sex and sexuality as important parts of their vital aging. Most older people are interested in sex, they find sex satisfying and they consider sex to be an important part of their lives.'' Coulter said older people were denied sex because they lacked partners, were affected by medication, or were ignorant about changes to their bodies. The Roper-Starch Inc. survey of 1,300 men and women over the age of 60 found that 48 percent of them said they have sex once a month or more. The study was funded in part by a grant from Pfizer Inc. (PFE - news) , which makes the impotence drug Viagra. But the council said this did not affect the survey's design. As most people might expect, sex tapers off with age, with 71 percent of men and 51 percent of women in their 60s having sex once a month or more and 27 percent of men and 18 percent of women in their 80s saying they do. Coulter said women had sex less often in part because women are more likely to be widowed. Thirty-nine percent of people said they were happy with the amount of sex they currently have -- even if it is none -- while another 39 percent said they would like to make love more often. Only 4 percent of the people surveyed said they would like to have sex less frequently. The people who had sex at least once a month said it was important to their relationship. The survey found that 74 percent of men and 70 percent of women find their sex lives more emotionally satisfying now that they are older than when they were in their 40s.
