Hitachi, Cisco In IP Telephony Tech Alliance

SAN JOSE (Dow Jones)--Hitachi America Ltd.'s Hitachi Semiconductor Inc. unit and Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) formed a strategic alliance to jointly develop scalable IP telephony reference platforms under the Cisco NetWorks Program.

In a press release Monday, Hitachi said the reference platforms and related technologies will be designed for network and Internet appliances manufacturers.

The products will enable high-quality, low-cost voice and data communications via the Internet, Hitachi said.

The first reference designs created by the alliance are expected to be available in the 1999 first quarter, Hitachi said.

Also, Hitachi and Cisco are working with other vendors to make development tools available in the fourth quarter as well.

Cisco provides networking for the Internet.

Hitachi America is a unit of Hitachi Ltd. (HIT), a Japanese electronics manufacturer.
