Lurker, I think you are not correct about this. Maybe it is too late at night, but the way I remember it, withholding from an employees pay is not an additional expense to the company. The salary is the expense, the withholding is a transfer payment from the employee to the government arranged by the company. So it might show up on the balance sheet if the company is holding money owed by the employee to a taxing authority. Half of SSI is paid by the company I believe in addition to the part paid by the employee. That is the only additional (major) payroll tax expense in addition to compensation.

If I have this wrong I apologize but I think I have it right.
