[Teligent Begins Carrying First Commercial Traffic Over Point-to-Multipoint Network in Los Angeles]

VIENNA, Va., Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Teligent, an integrated communications company, today began carrying traffic for its first commercial customers over Teligent's "point-to-multipoint" communications network in Los Angeles.

The announcement culminates a year during which Teligent, working with its principal equipment supplier, Nortel (Northern Telecom), developed, tested and enhanced "point-to-multipoint" network equipment. That effort began with a "point-to-multipoint" network demonstration and test in Richardson, Texas in October 1997.

"This is a critical step for Teligent as we begin integrating 'point-to-multipoint' wireless technology into the local communications networks we are building in major markets around the country," said Teligent President and Chief Operating Officer Kirby G. "Buddy" Pickle.

Targeting small and medium-sized businesses, Teligent plans to launch lower-cost local, long distance, high-speed data and dedicated Internet service over its own local networks in 15 major markets nationwide by the end of the year. The company eventually will serve customers in 74 markets comprising more than 750 cities and towns with a combined population of approximately 130 million.

Instead of digging up streets to lay fiber optic cable, Teligent delivers service by installing antennas, smaller than a PC monitor, on the roofs of customer buildings. Using Internet Protocol (IP) and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) technology, the digital microwave radios relay voice, data and video signals from the customer building to a Teligent base station. From the base station, the signals are routed to a Teligent switch facility. At the switch facility, Teligent uses ATM switches and data routers along with Nortel DMS 500 switches to hand off the traffic to other networks -- the public voice network, the Internet and private data networks.

The initial "point-to-multipoint" network in Los Angeles comprises three base stations and 19 customer building antennas in the Mid-Wilshire and Westside areas. Teligent's first commercial point-to-multipoint customers began sending and receiving traffic over the network today.

Working with Nortel, Teligent conducted extensive tests of the "point-to-multipoint" technology prior to customer installation to ensure reliable features, functionality and flexibility. Nortel and Teligent will continue to enhance the "point-to-multipoint" radio equipment.

"We're excited that Nortel's release of the Reunion 1.1 product provides Teligent with the capability to be the first to install commercial customers on a 'point-to-multipoint' network," said Matthew J. Desch, President of Wireless Networks, Nortel. "We are well-positioned to meet Teligent's deployment requirements."

"Point-to-multipoint" technology will allow Teligent to serve large clusters of customer buildings with a single base station, increasing network efficiency and lowering network costs. Because "point-to-point" technology continues to offer advantages in lower density areas, Teligent will integrate both technologies into its fixed wireless communications networks.

"The technology is designed to be transparent to our customers," said Keith W. Kaczmarek, Teligent Senior Vice President for Engineering and Operations. "Our goal is to provide customers with high quality, low cost, high-speed service using the most efficient transmission technology."

-a dismal day in wireless clecs--check out tgnt---share price exceeds wcii substantially, as does market cap because they were "the first" to rollout PMP commercially ---go figure...Artt's financing still requires artt to independently raise more money, but it's a 3fer---evry $ from a lender/debt deal gets 2 more from LU, after the first 50mm, as to which 1/2 goes to lu?? makes it easier to borrow, for sure.. look to wcii doing some kind of deal with LU to get at artt
If we owned tgnt, we'd have more money, and not have had to listen to fink and Mr, Cogan explain patiently what morons we are for continuing to believe in a stock with no earnings and big debt...ugh...
our market cap is actually now only 66% of tgnt!!!Hurt me...
