From a general use point of view, high impact plastic is probably more desirable.

Magnesium is one of the lightest elements in nature (which are solid at room temperature that is). So it shouldn't be noticeably heavier than plastic. Plus I presume is stronger than plastic, so in the end the case might even weight less than a comparable plastic one.

I don't know if the Portege beats the PB or not, but I think it is certainly attacking the same segment.
