I don't know who the market makers are, but I suppose that the increased interest is due to the recommendations from such as "Growth Stock Winners", an investors' letter and www.STOCKWINNERS.com
which made EMC their stock of the week. EMC is getting a lot of attention these days, richly deserved, IMHO.

Simon:

Because EMC is a NYSE stock, there are technically no "Market Makers" as such. The function of maintaining an orderly market in a particular NYSE stock is the responsibility of a "Specialist" who is charged with maintaining the "book" for the stock and maintaining an orderly market in a way similar to, but not exactly the same as, the MM on NASDAQ. The Specialists are NYSE member firms to whom the Specialist responsibilities for a particular stock are assigned by the Exchange.

Someone more knowledgeable than I would have to comment on the specific differences between Specialists and Market Makers in such areas as the taking of risk positions to maintain an orderly market, etc.

Hope that this is more helpful than confusing.
