Most of time, if they have warning they will get out of your way. The problem is surprising them..Unless of course, they are garbage bears, then they are not afraid of anything.. A real problem in national parks and the bears are usually the ones that pay for the encroachment of man into their territory..

We wear bells when we hike in the mountains, usually carry air horns, you know those things that make the horrible noise and would wake the dead.. Also, take some serious precautions with food and other smelly things. LOL.. And keep our fingers crossed, we usually go in groups and let people know where we are going and our ETA back..

But, of course, no one is completely prepared for the unexpected occurence..
