Yes, it is still legal. I first did that in 1972. I didn't live here, but it was sure fun. We had a stiff cardboard hitch-hiking sign that said "OUTER SPACE". We lost it near Medford, and by golly, we got let out at an off-ramp about a week later near King City CA, and there it was, by the highway.

Fitting, for King City, actually.

I think I moved to Oregon for that reason - hitchhiking. I remember feeling like I had crossed over into the land of the free every time I came here.

New Mexico, too, felt that way to me.

I miss the hitchhiking. Crossed the country about 10 times and LIVED!!
