Ed Kjaer Joins SCE as Director of Electric Transportation
PR Newswire - September 28, 1998 16:50

ROSEMEAD, Calif., Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern California Edison (SCE) has announced the appointment of automotive industry marketing executive Ed Kjaer as its director of electric transportation.

Kjaer (pronounced: "CARE") manages the day-to-day operations of the utility's Electric Transportation Division, which was established in 1991 to provide an affordable and reliable power supply support system for electric vehicles (EVs) in Southern California. The division is also a national leader and prominent advocate for the EV industry, and promotes industry growth through its involvement in technological research and battery and charger testing programs.

A native of New Zealand, Kjaer brings nearly 20 years of brand management and marketing experience, primarily from the automotive industry. Before joining SCE, Kjaer was automotive director at Edison EV.

"Ed's experience at Edison EV and major automobile manufacturers -- coupled with his solid background in marketing, sales and advertising -- will help advance SCE's leadership role in the electric vehicle industry," said Linda Ziegler, SCE's director of market management. "He will be a strong industry advocate and build on SCE's commitment to technological innovation and other major efforts that will help expand consumer acceptance and use of EVs."

Before joining Edison EV in 1996, Kjaer was corporate marketing manager for Mazda Motors of America. From 1982 to 1988, he managed automotive advertising for Ketchum Communications, ultimately serving as the company's vice president in Los Angeles, responsible for promoting Acura automobiles.

"I look forward to the challenges ahead with great enthusiasm," said Kjaer of his appointment. "These are exciting times for the EV industry, and I plan to keep SCE in the forefront of the movement to adopt new transportation technologies and expand the state's public charging network, which is the essential key to developing the EV industry."

SCE has long been a proponent and user of EVs as a partial solution to the region's air quality problems. The utility operates and maintains a fleet of some 160 EVs, having logged more than 1 million miles. The company also conducts EV testing and related training activities at its EV Technical Center in Pomona.

An Edison International (NYSE: EIX) company, Southern California Edison is the nation's second largest investor-owned electric utility, serving 11 million people in a 50,000-square-mile area within central, coastal and Southern California.
