Hitachi PC Corp. on Monday announced the availability of its two-member VisionBase family of Intel
servers.

The company's high-end model, the Hitachi 8460, is a four-way Pentium II Xeon model; the entry-level
Hitachi VisionBase 8240 is a two-way server based on the Pentium II processor.

Hitachi introduced the servers at PC Expo, in New York, in June. The company targeted September
availability at that time.

The VisionBase 8460 server with as many as four 400-MHz Pentium II Xeon processors, each with 512KB of Level 2 (L2) cache, supports as much as 8GB of main memory and includes five 32-bit and five 64-bit PCI slots, and one 32-bit ISA/PCI slot.

The VisionBase 8240 is powered by one or two 400-MHz Pentium II processors with 512KB of L2 cache, has as much as 1GB of main memory, and includes four PCI slots.

The servers are equipped with Hitachi PC's Hitachi System Manager software for Microsoft Windows NT.

The tower-model servers are equipped with redundant cooling, power supply, and hot-swap RAID disk storage. The servers run on Unix, NT, and NetWare operating systems.

The VisionBase 8240 is priced between $4,799 and $6,999, with the VisionBase 8460 ranging from $19,500 to $28,500. Hitachi says it will flesh out the line with several new models beginning this winter
