09/29/98 - Auto Industry Facing Time of 'Radical Change'

Paris, France - In the next 20-years, the world automotive industry will be
facing radical changes that will completely alter the nature of its
companies and products, according to Dr. Daniel Roos of the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His comments came during
discussions of the automobile's future at the FISITA World Automotive
Congress. Dr. Roos said traditional automakers are far too conservative in
their view of coming changes, noting that the recent merger of Daimler
and Chrysler is only a mild example of what is ahead. He foresees that in
two decades today's major automakers may not be the drivers of the
vehicle industry, there could be a radical shift in power to parts and
system suppliers, and that completely new players, such as electronics
and software firms, may be the real competitors to automakers. In the face
of increasing costs, urban congestion, pollution and global warming, he
said people are demanding new products, and challenged the auto
industry to think carefully what business it should be in: car
manufacturing, or mobility and services?
