Wow, so they are closing the Austin plant. I wonder what will happen to the medium current implanter line. Presumably it will be manufactured in Beverly, but medium current is a different animal than high current/high energy, and I'm sure they're going to lose a lot of medium-current expertise in the layoff. I also wonder what will happen to the MC3 project. I saw Mary Puma on local TV saying that they expect the semi-equip slump to last another 12 to 18 months. Ouch! I guess if that's the case they'll have time to build up some medium-current talent in Beverly. And since 300mm development has been delayed to 2002 or so, they can coast on the existing 8250 product and delay further MC3 development. I just hope this doesn't kill Eaton's future ability to compete in the medium current slot in their implanter offering. Even though they weren't doing that great now, they had good products out there and should have been coming on strong if it weren't for this disastrous industry slump.

G.P.
