WinStar Seeks Partner to Expand Quickly in Europe, Paper Says

Paris, Sept. 29 (Bloomberg) -- WinStar Communications Inc., a U.S. phone company that uses local wireless networks, is looking for a partner to help it fund expansion in Europe, French newspaper Les Echos reported, citing WinStar Chairman and Chief Executive Bill Rouhana. He said the New York-based company is looking for one or two ''financial partners'' and that he would be open to them taking a stake in WinStar or being the controlling shareholders in a new European unit. Expanding in Europe fits in with WinStar's goal of being present in the 100 biggest cities around the world, the paper said.

Shares of U.K. local wireless phone company Ionica Group Plc fell 33 percent Friday after it said it was in talks with an unnamed investor that may lead to a rescue of its telephone unit at a price below its market value.
