Mike:

the single reason the USA is so far ahead of the rest of the world in new technologies is simple. They promote a free market competition through technology and companies.

For once we agree.... :^)

marginmike, I must remember this next time when I fill my pockets with quarters to join a public phone line to make a call in the States. It is obviously insignificant that in KL in Malaysia or in Manila, Philippines I could sit in any back street cafe drinking beer, getting calls from my business associates (yes, one number covers the world) and receiving and sending email. All with a 4 inch phone which
has infrared port and which doubles as an alarm clock, calculator and has games in it. This is reality. Today.

Seriously speaking, the US is ahead in most of the other hi-tech fields. Its arguable how much can be credited to smart people and how much to the policies. But mobile telephony... my guess is that it'll take maybe 5 years for the US to be where, say, Poland was in -96.
