[America Online Inc. Appoints Mario Vecchi Vice President Of Broadband Development]

(definitely another sign that last-mile broadband is ramping up... -- mark)

DULLES, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 29, 1998--America Online Inc. Tuesday announced that Mario Vecchi has joined the company in the new position of Vice President of Broadband Development.

Formerly Senior VP and Chief Technical Officer of Time-Warner's Road Runner Group, Dr. Vecchi will report to Miles Gilburne, Senior Vice President of Corporate Development, and oversee AOL's strategic initiatives to bring broadband services to its 13 million members.

"With his considerable technical and business expertise, Mario Vecchi is a welcome addition to our team as we position AOL to make the promise of broadband a reality for the mass market," said Steve Case, chairman and CEO of America Online Inc.

"AOL's broad appeal, strong member loyalty and successful brand marketing put us in a unique position to accelerate the delivery of broadband's benefits to millions of consumers around the world."

Vecchi has more than 20 years experience in developing and deploying new technologies, including co-founding Road Runner, Time-Warner's pioneering cable modem online service. Vecchi served as the technical leader of Road Runner from its initial concept in 1994, through a market trial in 1995, to its commercial deployment in 12 cities by 1998.

Since 1996, Vecchi served as senior vice president and chief technical officer of the Road Runner Group. Vecchi built Road Runner's engineering and tech ops organization from the ground up, defined the network, systems and service architecture and developed vendors for the products, integration, deployment and support of the Road Runner rollouts.

From 1994 to 1996, Vecchi served as vice president, Network Engineering, for Time Warner Cable in Englewood, Colo. Prior to that, he served as vice president, Network Architecture Design and Development for Cable Labs in Boulder, Colo. (1993), and as director of Bellcore's Applied Research Area in Morristown, N.J. (1986 to 1993).

In 1983 he founded Xynertek CA, a pioneering venture that designed and manufactured microcomputer systems in Venezuela.

Vecchi said: "I am excited about joining AOL at this time because of the many opportunities available to the Company. With its broad consumer base, it's ideally positioned to be the leader in new developments in Internet access, new technologies, and new services. Nobody is better positioned than AOL to make the Internet even more affordable, accessible and easy to use."

Vecchi, 50, received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering and computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1975, and a BS from Cornell University in 1969. He also has a degree in professional engineering from the Universidad Central de Venezuela, which he received in 1979.
