NEWARK -- A fire yesterday morning at the Ultralife Batteries Inc. plant ignited barrels of lithium, prompting village and health officials to encourage residents to stay in their homes through much of the day.

Smoldering barrels of lithium -- a hazardous material used in lithium batteries -- sent smoke wafting across the southern part of the village. The fire broke out in a storage area outside the plant shortly before 10 a.m., fire officials said. When Newark firefighters doused the barrels, some apparently erupted, emergency officials said. The fire was under control quickly, but Xerox Corp. specialists spent most of the day handling the materials. No further details about the cause of the fire or damage were available. ....
