VideoLogic Launches DVD Player for PCs Using Sigma Designs' Single-Chip REALmagic DVD/MPEG-2 Decoder
VideoLogic Uses Sigma's REALmagic EM8300 Decoder in Its Second-Generation DVD Playback Cards for OEM/Upgrade Markets
FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 29, 1998-- Sigma Designs Inc. (Nasdaq:SIGM - news), a leader in DVD decoder solutions for personal computers, today announced that VideoLogic has based its new product, DVD Player, on Sigma's EM8300 REALmagic DVD/MPEG-2 decoder chip.

DVD Player is a low-cost PCI add-in card that elevates any standard PC with a DVD-ROM drive to a powerful DVD movie player. VideoLogic is an international company that develops, designs, and supplies market-leading 2D/3D graphics accelerator and audio products for PCs, game consoles, and arcade entertainment machines.

Designed for the PC OEM (original equipment manufacturer) and upgrade markets, DVD Player is shipping now in the UK and in Europe. The VideoLogic DVD Player uses Sigma's latest generation of integrated decoders to combine low cost with exceptional digital video quality, providing high-definition, full-screen, full frame rate DVD/MPEG-2 video with Dolby Digital audio for a complete home-cinema experience, even with a Pentium 133 class machine.

A comprehensive second-generation solution, DVD Player works with the consumer's existing graphics card to provide superior picture and sound quality, on a par with expensive stand-alone DVD players.

''We are delighted to welcome an innovative company such as VideoLogic to our customer circle,'' stated William Wong, Sigma's vice president of marketing. ''Sigma believes this is an important European design win. VideoLogic's success in global marketing may result in distributing our technology throughout Europe, which would increase our installed base in that geographic region, dependent on the acceptance and use of DVD Player in the marketplace.

''Our EM8300 silicon and reference design for DVD decoder cards provides an integrated, flexible, and cost-effective solution for the PC upgrade market. The VideoLogic DVD player is the solution for the user who wants to put together a DVD playback system,'' Wong concluded.

Facilitating development of systems based on the EM8300, a complete turnkey reference design is available from Sigma Designs. A comprehensive hardware and software solution completely ready for manufacturing, the reference design includes an evaluation board, schematics, Gerber printed circuit board plots, drivers, and Sigma's DVD-Station software.

The VideoLogic DVD Player supports all DVD audio formats, including Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic, MPEG-2, and stereo. It can be used with a Dolby Digital decoder/amplifier to drive a complete six-speaker (5.1 channel) surround system, with a Dolby Pro Logic decoder/amplifier, or with a PC sound card such as SonicStorm from VideoLogic.

DVD Player can be connected to either a PC monitor or a television set (both NTSC and PAL modes) for a real home cinema experience. Movie titles are already available from Time-Warner, MGM, and other major studios.
