To the thread:

An interesting report was issued by the National Research
Council in Nov. 97 on the Evolution of Untethered
Communications:

nap.edu

This report makes recommendations for DARPA research
priorities in the area of wireless communications.
Prominent among these are software radios
(including components and filters), smart antennas,
and smart waveforms (improved spread-spectrum
technologies).

NT is a great across the board bet on communications technology, but it doesn't offer pure play on anything. It's strong in WDM, but it always wants to combine it with SONET TDM megadollar muxes. It's strong in GSM, but it also is heavy in CDMA. It's dominant in microwave wireless at 28 and 38 gigahertz, but the market is moving viscidly. It has cable modems through Bay LAN City and DSL galore in every flavor. In other words, it's less a corporate choice than a communications portfolio.
