Philips Semiconductors Introduces Next-Generation IEEE 1394 200 Mbits/sec. Physical Layer Controller

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 29, 1998--

Industry's Only IEEE 1394A Bus Reset Standard

Compliant Device Now Available

Philips Semiconductors today announced the release of its next-generation 200 megabit-per-second (Mbits/sec) IEEE 1394 physical layer controller (PHY), the PDI1394P11.

The PDI1394P11 is the only 200 Mbits/sec physical layer controller available that supports the IEEE 1394A short arbitrated bus reset standard while operating at power levels significantly lower than other industry-standard PHY devices. Samples are available immediately.

While supporting up to three ports running at 100 or 200 Mbits/sec, Philips Semiconductors' PDI1394P11 provides designers with a physical layer controller that can interface with any 3-volt or 5-volt link layer and is pin compatible with other manufacturers PHYs.

Since the PDI1394P11 is a 1394A short arbitrated bus reset compliant device, bus rest time is lowered to 1.3 microseconds -- significantly less than other industry devices that run closer to 167 microseconds. This reduces isochronous data loss that is caused by extended reset time.

Power consumption, in both active and power down modes, is less than half of other similar PHY devices which makes the Philips Semiconductors' PDI1394P11 suitable for portable and battery-powered applications. Typical PDI1394P11 active power consumption is 60 mA while in power-down mode it is Typical 2 mA.

"The PDI1394P11 not only supports the IEEE 1394A short arbitrated bus reset standard, but also operates at significantly reduced power levels," said Allen Light, 1394 marketing and applications manager. "With experience in a wide range of consumer and audio-visual products, Philips Semiconductors is moving toward developing a wide variety of system solutions that help designers easily develop IEEE 1394-compliant devices."

Philips Semiconductors' PDI1394P11 physical layer controller, when used with its companion link layer controller (the previously announced PDI1394L11), form a proven and complete 1394 system solution. Combined with other related devices, such as MPEG2 decoders and digital video decoders, this system is ideal for audio-visual devices and other applications.

Projected pricing for 100+ units is $7.00, while quantities that exceed 25,000 will be priced at approximately $4 per unit.

Earlier this year, Philips Semiconductors and Texas Instruments (TI) signed an interoperability agreement that for the next generation of physical layer devices, which will support 400 Mbits/sec operation PHY devices. Under the terms of the agreement, both companies will share specification information for their two-, three-, four- and six-port 400 Mbits/sec PHY devices.

Each company can differentiate their respective products by incorporating additional features and capabilities while conforming to a common specification for pin-out, packaging and signalling.
