By GEORGE KING and CARL CAMPANILE

A worried Yankee slugger Darryl Strawberry took
himself out of last night's playoff game against
Texas - and doctors are expected to do a cancer
test on a growth they discovered on his colon.

I am not doing too good today, a somber
Strawberry told The Post after a CAT-scan
yesterday.

The tests found a pimple in the colon area. The
doctor said it was good that I came in when I did,
because if it had grown and burst, I would have
really been sick.

Strawberry said he will be undergoing further tests
today - and doctors are expected to be checking if
the growth is malignant.

He told The Post he was concerned about the pain
in his lower left abdomen, and that he decided to
have himself checked out after a recent
conversation with lifelong friend Eric Davis - the
Baltimore Oriole slugger diagnosed with colon
cancer last year.

Strawberry also said there was a family history of
cancer; his mother, Ruby, died of breast cancer in
1996.

Anytime you take tests, cancer is the one thing you
fear, Yankee skipper Joe Torre said. I am sure by
tomorrow we will have more of a handle on it.

Fans piling into Yankee Stadium last night for
Game 2 of the AL Division Series against the
Rangers were pulling for Strawberry.

I hope he's OK, said Lorie Thomas of Summit,
N.J. It's really too bad if it's worse than an infection.
We could use him - but his health is more
important.

Thomas said Strawberry was not just an
inspiration for teammates.

It's a great story that he cleaned himself up from
the drugs, she said. He's had a great year.
