Yet I believe it is at least possible that the apparent magnitude of the LTCM situation will create distortions not present in many "wall" scenarios.

That is a risk. Also given the poor internal controls at some of these firms that allowed people with direct investments in the fund to okay credit extensions to the fund and therefore indirectly to themselves, it is fair to be concerned about their ability to compartmentalize this.
