Gene patenting is a very interesting area,
I admit to being totally ignorant of the law.
But I suppose zero is as good a starting point
as anywhere. Wife's a lawyer, so I hope she
can find some resources for me, if I find any
really useful links I'll post them--so far, I
did find an interesting article on the web:

(snip) NIH has been widely criticized for filing
applications in June 1991 and February 1992 seeking
patent protection for partial cDNA sequences identified
by Dr. Craig Venter(snip)

article has some law and some interesting stuff regarding
Expressed Sequence Tags.

Do a search of Expressed Sequence Tags here on SI,
sorry, I did just that and began chasing my own tail:

The second message that will come up if you did that
search is better than mine, and is worth checking out:
It's from "Dr. Goodhybe" on the affx thread:

I guess I liked that show on PBS Connections
a little too much...off I go again to the Scientific
American article he sites--hope I can find it online!
