Belgian Economics Ministry Approves Price For Viagra October 1, 1998 BRUSSELS (Dow Jones)--The Belgian Economics Ministry approved Thursday the price of impotency treatment drug Viagra, a product of U.S. pharmaceutical company Pfizer Inc. (PFE). Belgian consumers will have to pay BEF1,365 for a box of 25 milligrams, BEF1,522 for a box of 50 milligrams and BEF1,759 for 100 milligrams. Every box will contain four tablets. In September, the European Union Commission approved the sale of Viagra in Europe. Pfizer recently said that it expects to launch the drug in 50 countries by the end of the year. Mireille Pierlet, a spokeswoman at the Economics Ministry, said Belgium is the second country after Germany to announce official prices. She added that Viagra will be distributed in Germany from Oct. 5, but said she did not know when the product will be launched on the Belgian market. 10/01 12:16 Belgium sets official selling price for Viagra BRUSSELS, Oct 1 (Reuters) - Belgium's Economics Ministry said on Thursday it set the price of Viagra, Pfizer Inc's <PFE.N> anti-impotency drug, following a unanimous decision by the country's Price Commission. Four 25 mg tablets of Viagra will be sold at 1,365 Belgian francs, or 341.25 francs ($10.01) each, the Economics Ministry said in a statement. Four 50 mg tablets will be priced at 1,522 francs, or 439.75 francs each, and four 100 mg tablets will be sold at 1,759 francs, or 439.75 francs each. Within the European Union, only Germany has so far set an official price for Viagra, the ministry said, noting prices in Germany will be higher than in Belgium. By comparison, a 25 mg tablet of Viagra in Germany will cost 415.02 francs, the Ministry said. U.S. drugs group Pfizer won marketing approval last month for the blue, diamond-shaped pills throughout the 15 countries of the European Union. Pfizer Belgium at the time said it aimed to have similar pricing for Viagra throughout all EU countries. Pfizer said it would not initially seek government permission for state health insurance reimbursement.
