As Gregg just said, CDMA has multiples greater "spectral efficiency" than GSM/TDMA (not to mention Amps, which is really inefficient.)

Data will expand to fill the available pipe even more quickly than voice. It will explode to fill. It's certainly doing that in wireline these days.

Wide versions of CDMA are optimized to handle data transmission better (as well as voice), using wider frequency spectrums to be made available.
