I know that we are not to judge a person on their salvation, but are we not told to judge a person by the fruit they bear? In other words we are to be "fruit inspectors". I agree in that churches should not become actively involved in politics by taking sides so to speak. The pastors should preach the word of God and the people make up their own minds about which candidate to vote for.

You may want to read it again. The Constitution clearly prohibits the government from interfering in the free exercise of religion, but it nowhere deals with the issue of religion influencing politics. As you said, the founding fathers were deists, and their beliefs absolutely influenced their actions and their politics.
