The smartest woman in America thought Bill and Monica were praying.

MAYBE THEY KNELT TO PRAY, HILL THOUGHT By VINCENT MORRIS

WASHINGTON - Hillary Clinton knew her husband was spending time with Monica Lewinsky but told an aide her man was simply ministering to the young intern, sources said yesterday.
Clinton adviser Sidney Blumenthal, who had heard rumors of the presidential affair, once asked The First Lady about contact between Clinton and Lewinsky, congressional sources said.

Her response, Blumenthal said in sworn testimony, was to insist Clinton, a Baptist, was merely offering spiritual guidance to the confused 22-year-old Jewish woman from Beverly Hills, the sources said.

Blumenthal said he was told that 'the president is just ministering to a troubled young woman,' said the Republican committee source.

Blumenthal's stunning tale of his conversation with the First Lady is part of his testimony to independent counsel Kenneth Starr.

He testified that when he finally confronted Clinton about Lewinsky, the president said the intern chased him and wanted sex so other White House workers could no longer accuse her of simply being a stalker.

Those transcripts - taken from more than 100 Starr witnesses like Linda Tripp, Vernon Jordan and Lewinsky's mom, Marcia Lewis - are slated for public release Friday.

The House Judiciary Committee next Monday will hold a vote on whether to launch a formal impeachment inquiry against Clinton.

Senate Republican leader Trent Lott yesterday irked the White House by saying bad conduct alone is enough for impeachment.

But two Democrats and two Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee yesterday tried to overcome the partisan bickering by offering a joint plan for fairness in the hearings.

The article was in today's Washington Post (September 30).

"washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/special/clinton/stories/poll093098.htm"

There's the URL (if I put in the http://www it cuts off the end of the URL) It won't change anyone's mind, of course, but it's still interesting to read.
