Visicalc, 1-2-3, CP/M (which Gates copied and called DOS), WordPerfect, IBM, Apple, Unix, WordStar, and every budding engineer sitting in their basement with a bunch of IBM parts was a possible threat of new innovation.

Microsoft copies ideas, they don't create them. Windows is the improvement of the Mac OS, DOS improved CP/M, Word copied WordPerfect, Excel copied Visicalc/1-2-3, Explorer copied Navigator/Mosaic. Microsoft's competition was/is anyone who did/does software.
