They are being politicians. It would be political suicide to acknowledge four days before the elections a severe fiscal package the day afer the elections. It will be at least a week and it will be couched in the best terms and it will be less severe than the alternative of multilateral intervention or a severe recession/depression catalyzed by 50%+ interest rates. They won't have to worry about being accused of lying by anyone save the left. And that doesn't matter.
