You are speaking with the benefit of hindsight. At the time that msft and appl made these choices it was far from certain what would happen. Early on Gates suggested to appl that they should license their software. They chose not to and we know what happened. The point is there was competition on many fronts. OS and Applications. I don't know what is so unique about yhoo or aol or mindspring or any of the others that we may look back on and say, "well of course, they had the (fill in the blank)". If I did I'd bet the ranch and retire. Too bad I don't have a clue or a ranch. jb
