> Death, destruction, extreme pollution of natural resources, turning a beautiful mountain with real potential into an ugly shell. After 20 years, land is still only starting to recover. Hope this was not an accurate analogy on your part!

Christopher,

I realise that this is no comfort to you or anyone else who witnessed or lived through the eruption, but as I geologist, I can tell you that Mt. St. Helens is just one of the millions of such events that have occurred over the earth's history. Such events made the earth what is today - for better or for worse. It is not possible for a purely natural event to 'pollute' in the strict sense.

20 years is basically zero on the scale of geologic time. Next time you're feeling cocky, think about this. If the entire history of the earth were to be scaled so that its 4.5 billion years was compressed into a 'year', homo sp. has been in existence for less than 4 hours of that year and homo sapiens has been around for 6 minutes. Gives me a sense of perspective, personally.

Mike

Sorry Mr. Hodgkin, wrong analogy. How about a rocket launch? Macy's fireworks? Champagne uncorked? (Am I getting closer?)
