Interesting thing about religion and politics - when you disagree with the religious angle and its political consequences, the faithful are demonized as the RR. When you agree with political ramifications of a religious viewpoint (for example people that base their generous views regarding welfare on their religious beliefs) the proponents are just good people.

It isn't the religion that people object to, it's the political stance that those particular people take. Religious liberals generally don't ascribe their political views to their religious values the way conservative religious people do. People are free to conclude, therefore, that liberal views are not based on religion, where conservative views are. This is not true, of course. Most people's values are based on their religious upbringing, even if the people are no longer devout. It's easier to disagree with someone if you can make them seem to be different or extreme.
