It was my understanding that the whole area (Cangalli Formation) was a congolomerate and thus very hard to deal with. Not just the river bed (fluvial material) and the matrix around the clasts consisted of red or blue clay material thus soft. I also have heard that the shafts (head frames) were very dangerous due to unstablility of the formation unless good engineering practices were implimented. No surprise there. Got to keep the engineers employed.

I guess that is why I dwelled on the drilling part so much was that drillling would be very difficult no matter where you were sitting on the property.
