Michael, I am totally opposed to the Makha Indian whale hunt. If you read the article you yourself cited, cultural hunting of whales is supposed to be only in cases where there is an unbroken cultural link to whaling, and the need for whale meat for subsistence. Also, the article pointed out that among the Makha, there is a debate, and some of the tribe, including elders, are opposed. I also think it establishes a dangerous precedent, since Norway and Japan consider themselves whale hunting cultures, and are anxious to use this as an excuse to start killing whales again themselves. So the real count will be several thousand dead whales.

Your leap to burning witches is not really logical, as I'm sure you know. However, unfortunately, women perceived as witches are still burned in primitive cultures. One was burned to death just last year. And how about the bride burnings in India, and the barbaric practice of female circumcision? There are many thousands of burnings and butchering every year. Anyway, all of this has nothing to do with whales.

However, a lot of violence has to do with religious belief systems. I even found a new web page with substantial footnotes regarding witch burnings, general repression by some very mean Christians, and even a little about the violence in Rwanda. Could it all be true?
