TM,

I think it is clear that the Digicast acquisition has exposed Diamond to significant legal liability. In a battle between the recording industry and Diamond Multimedia, I'd place my money on the considerable resources of the recording industry.

In evaluating Diamond's other new products, I feel compelled to make mention of HomeFree. Diamond's press releases omit three key issues involving the device:

1.) Security- There's a reason it's called HomeFree, no corporate user in his right mind would consider broadcasting a datastream over publicly accessible RF spectrum. From a consumer perspective, this device facilitates the public broadcast of personal information. From where I'm sitting, HomeFree is an expose waiting to happen.

2.) Bandwidth- Diamond claims a maximum of 1 Mbps. Leaving aside the question of interference, this is slower than a CD-ROM drive and no where near the level of performance offered by corded networking solutions.

3.) Price- Diamond wants over $200 for a 1 Mbps network card. Ethernet cards delivering significantly higher performance retail for 1/10th as much.
